Povolný, Filip ; Glembek, Ondřej (referee) ; Matějka, Pavel (advisor)
This master's thesis deals with code-switching detection in speech. The state-of-the-art methods of language diarization are described in the first part of the thesis. The proposed method for implementation is based on acoustic approach to language identification using combination of GMM, i-vector and LDA. New Mandarin-English code-switching database was created for these experiments. Using this system, accuracy of 89,3 % is achieved on this database.
Strategien im Umgang mit Mehrsprachigkeit in virtueller Projektkommunikation - eine Fallstudie
KRÄMER, Hannah Theresa
With help of methodological and data triangulation, the online written and oral communication of a virtual project team was investigated in order to answer the question of which strategies the team members develop in multilingual interaction via different media. Light is shed on the use of ELF as a genuinely multilingual practice. The central role of pronounced multilingual competence of the project leaders, as well as the advantages of communication in the mother tongue for building a familiar relationship become evident. The communication in the team presents itself as open to language changes, which allows creativity and joy in the use of language.
Standard Czech Morphology in TV Show
Mašek, Ondřej ; Sojka, Pavel (advisor) ; Adam, Robert (referee)
The aim of the diploma thesis was to find out to what extent there is a violation of the standard of writing in two specific interview programs, namely the XTalk and Interview ČT24. Both shows have similar footage (around 22-28 minutes), essentially the same dialogical composition (the host asks questions and the guest answers), but the personality of the host is different. The hosts of both shows are professionals in their field, so non-standard phenomena occur only sporadically (often in more emotionally loaded situations), but their moderation style, which creates a different atmosphere in the studio in both shows, may leads to more frequent violations of the standard norm of the Czech language in XTalk. Of course, the selection of guests also played a role, in which we noticed the frequency of occurrence of non-standard variants, the influence of the communication role, selected sociolinguistic factors and the host. The obtained data was compared with two years older research of dialogical texts of radio journalism by two corpus sources of commonly spoken Czech. The research sample consisted of a total of thirty interviews from 2018-2021. The analysis of the obtained data showed that the speakers could be divided into three groups in terms of the occurrence of non-standard variants: speakers...
How to become bilingual: Process of acquisition of second language at different ages
Dejmalová, Tereza ; Klinka, Tomáš (advisor) ; Jančík, Jiří (referee)
Title of the thesis: How to become bilingual : Process of acquisition of second language at different ages This bachelor thesis deals with the development of bilingualism. The objective of this work is to show how we become bilingual at different ages and prove that the process of learning a second language is not the same at every age of life. The work builds the solution on the theories of linguists and on the practical research which is presented in the form of the case studies and analysis of language speech. The first chapter of the work is focused on the definition of bilingualism and the second one is about the types of this phenomenon. The third chapter presents the process of language acquisition. Individual parts of this chapter deal with the process of language acquisition of the mother tongue by monolingual children, further the simultaneous acquisition of two languages from birth, the process of acquisition by the children who integrate a second language between 3 - 6 years and finally the acquisition of a second language by the persons after 6 years. The fourth chapter is dedicated to the phenomena which are associated with the bilingualism. The last one presents the case studies of three types of bilingualism which are defined by age in the theoretical part. The studies are compared...
Syntaktická analýza textů se střídáním kódů
Ravishankar, Vinit ; Zeman, Daniel (advisor) ; Mareček, David (referee)
(English) Vinit Ravishankar July 2018 The aim of this thesis is twofold; first, we attempt to dependency parse existing code-switched corpora, solely by training on monolingual dependency treebanks. In an attempt to do so, we design a dependency parser and ex- periment with a variety of methods to improve upon the baseline established by raw training on monolingual treebanks: these methods range from treebank modification to network modification. On this task, we obtain state-of-the- art results for most evaluation criteria on the task for our evaluation language pairs: Hindi/English and Komi/Russian. We beat our own baselines by a sig- nificant margin, whilst simultaneously beating most scores on similar tasks in the literature. The second part of the thesis involves introducing the relatively understudied task of predicting code-switching points in a monolingual utter- ance; we provide several architectures that attempt to do so, and provide one of them as our baseline, in the hopes that it should continue as a state-of-the-art in future tasks. 1

Dabova, Vesela ; Gladkova, Hana (advisor) ; Rangelová, Albena (referee) ; Tisheva, Yovka (referee)
in English This work consists of five chapters: a theoretical part, which specifies the theoretical basis of the text (especially concepts related to bilingualism and language contact); methodological part, which specifies the objectives and methods of field research (identification of target group, subject of research, qualitative and quantitative methods, technical part of the survey); historical part relating to the origin and life of the Bulgarian minority in the Czech Republic; sociolinguistic part analyzing the sociolinguistic influences of Czech language on Bulgarian language; language part, analyzing the interference from language perspective. The objective of this work is sociolinguistic and linguistic analysis of the speech behavior of Bulgarian-speaking bilingual individuals in Czech linguistic environment, due to which to understand what impact a foreign language - Czech (E2) has on the mother tongue - Bulgarian (E1) in speech events in E1; which are the factors that cause it and how it is manifested in speech acts of bilingual individuals. We analyze the effect of E2 on E1 by sociolinguistic aspects, taking into account all sociolinguistic factors that affect the speech acts of individuals. After analyzing the ways of impact of E2 to E1, a linguistic analysis is made, i.e. a...

Revitalization of the Regional Language in Provence by the Medium of Calandreta Schools Richard Vacula (Abstract) This thesis focuses on the role of bilingual Calandreta schools in the process of maintenance and revitalisation of the regional language in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region, France. It is based on empirical research undertaken in form of questionnaires and directed interviews in the place of two existing Provençal Calandretas, Gap and Orange. A sample of the local population and respondents from the area of the two schools has been included in the research. We have studied linguistic behaviour, attitudes towards regional education, and the picture of the schools and the language in question. The results suggest that the public is inclined towards the essentials of the language being taught, however, less so towards bilingual education. The results also show that the potential of the schools observed lies rather in their pedagogical methods. The strong pressure of French is noticeable even on the grounds of the schools. The use of Occitan in everyday communication situations is then somewhat rare. The regional language is noticeably associated with the school environment and is connected with specific contexts. Hence, it is necessary to rate the influence of the Calandreta schools on the real...
